Photon extractors are small devices that passively absorb photons as energy from light sources to be used in other devices. Standard FUS laser pistols use photon extractors to allow continuous recharging of the weapon, making clips unnecessary. However, as more powerful weapons need more energy (like the standard FUS carbine or sniper), photon extractors cannot absorb enough energy on their own, so power packs are needed to provide energy.
